Trigeminal neuralgia is the most excruciatingly painful and ongoing condition (neuropathic pain). Tic douloureux is another name for it. One of the most widely distributed nerves in the head is the 5th Cranial nerve, also known as the trigeminal nerve. When this nerve is damaged (by a nerve lesion or injury), the person experiences severe pain in the facial and head regions that it controls. This condition causes progressive, severe, intense, sporadic pain that sometimes feels like an electric shock. Each episode of pain can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. The attacks can come in rapid succession and last for hours. The pain is both mentally and physically exhausting. Women are more likely than men to be affected by TN. Those with this condition may experience sudden and severe pain with even minor stimulation of their face while applying makeup or brushing their teeth. Initially, painful attacks are mild, brief, and infrequent, but as TN progresses, they become severe, prolonged, and more frequent.
